It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Irene Findlay (née Hamel) who passed away peacefully on February 7, 2025 at the ripe young age of 106. A beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. Irene was known for her sharp wit, warm heart, and zest for life.

Irene was predeceased by her beloved husband Victor Findlay and cherished daughters Carol Monty (Don) and Joan Findlay (Paul).

She leaves her legacy to be carried on by her grandchildren, Rachel Clowes (Michael), Sarah Shanahan (David), Ryan Monty (Parinaz), Meaghan Shanahan (Mark) and Kevin Shanahan (Lea). Proud Gigi (great-grandma) to Amy, Quinn, Sebastian, Eric, Nora, Olivier and Lena.

Irene lived a remarkable life full of adventure and joy. A devoted Catholic, whose faith helped guide her throughout her life. She was a woman who loved her family above all else, and her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. Her warmth and wisdom touched the lives of everyone she met, and her legacy of love will be carried on through generations.

A true enthusiast of life’s pleasures, Irene had a passion for golf, bridge, cooking, and never turned down a strong drink. Her love of golf kept her on the course well into her nineties, where her competitive spirit thrived. Whether hosting a dinner party or sharing a drink with friends, she made everyone feel special with her cooking, always creating memorable meals all from memory, without a recipe.

Irene will be remembered for her unwavering energy, her love for a good laugh, and the joy she found in the little moments. She was fiercely independent and never turned down a good challenge. She was always ready to offer a joke, a delicious homemade meal, or a toast to celebrate life.

Her family is comforted knowing that she lived a full life, one rich with love, laughter, and cherished memories. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love.

Family and friends are invited to Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, on Friday, March 21st, 2025, for a Memorial Service at 10:00 a.m., with a Reception to follow at Beechwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, in memory of her husband and daughters, who left us too soon.

I met Irene and Meaghan when Irene had moved in to her granddaughter's loving home after a fall in her senior's building. A caregiver was required to assist her in the morning when her busy family were getting ready for work/daycare. I was lucky enough to become that caregiver. Irene shared with me some of her secrets to living a happy life. Don't interfere with family's decisions or give your opinion when not asked. Always greet the day positively and give it your all. Be friendly with everyone you meet; a smile doesn't cost anything. Stay informed and connected to those around you. She was never too busy to share a story, a laugh, or to ask others about themselves. Loving and patient, she appreciated the little things and always spoke so lovingly about her family members. i will miss her but am filled with the love she left behind and that is enough. Thank you, Irene, for everything.

So many great memories of being in Dorval with Auntie Irene and Uncle Vic when I went to stay with Joan (Carol had to put up with both of us) and on occassions such as the family reunion. Auntie Irene had a great sense of humour and a high tolerance for two teenage girls hanging around in the summer. I always had a great time. Much love and sympathy to you all on her passing.

At this difficult time, we turn to memories of Irene not with tears but smiles for her zest for living her long life. May you turn to those memories of all you and your family shared to carry you all during your darkest hours.
