Ian Edwin Sutherland died peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 13, 2026.
Ian was born on June 23, 1948, in Ottawa, Ontario, to Gordon Alexander Sutherland and Dorothy Eleanor Sutherland (née Rose). Raised in Ottawa, he carried throughout his life a deep curiosity about the world and a personality that made time spent with him memorable.
Ian had a great sense of humour, a seemingly endless supply of random knowledge, and he always had a story to share. Conversations with Ian often turned into lively discussions filled with surprising facts, memorable anecdotes, and plenty of laughter. His storytelling and quick wit made him someone people enjoyed spending time with.
He spent much of his working life with Boyd Moving and Storage. For Ian, the job was never just about moving things from one place to another. It also brought him into contact with many interesting people and experiences, stories he was always happy to recount to friends and family.
Ian was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Dorothy, and by his sister Joan.
He is lovingly remembered by his sister Elaine Snow (née Sutherland) and brother-in-law Randy Snow; his nephew Michael (Natalie); and his niece Diana (Simon). Ian also enjoyed getting to know the next generation of the family, including Michael’s son Matthew and Diana’s daughter Audrey.
A Celebration of Ian’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 1st, 2026, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at The Borden and Fleming Suites at Beechwood National Memorial Centre (280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa). Words of Remembrance will be shared around 3:00pm. Friends and family are encouraged to remember him in the way he would have enjoyed most - through stories, laughter, and time spent together.
