Kenneth John Sabad

Peacefully in his sleep on Friday, July 11, 2025, Kenneth John Sabad in his 87th year, at his home at the Ottawa Perley Rideau Veterans Centre. Ken was born in Killarney, Manitoba on September 28, 1938. He joined the Canadian army in 1955 as an infantryman in the Queen’s Own Rifles but soon found his true calling as a Physical Training Instructor, excelling in many sports such as boxing, hockey, fastball, and gymnastics. In retirement, he golfed (more) and through numerous curling championships including a Canadian Masters win in 2000, was elected into the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame in 2022. His military career took him from various provinces to Germany and also a United Nations peacekeeping tour in Egypt in 1974.

Ken enjoyed a rich and lucky family life. Predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Myrtle, in 1999, and his partner, Lori, in 2021, he leaves behind 4 children: Michele (Don Thomas), Mark (Carol Ann O'Meara), Joey, and Sheldon (Shelley Langille); grandchildren D’Arcy, Sasha, Tony, Ryan, Joanna, and Taylor; great-grandchildren Henry, Gloria, Jack, and Oppy.

A private memorial gathering for Ken will be held at Beechwood Funeral Home & Cemetery, followed by interment at a future date with his wife Myrtle in their hometown cemetery in Holmfield, Manitoba.

Special thanks to the staff at Perley for making Ken’s final years so happy and comfortable; also, to friend and companion Fernando from idealcaregivers4u.

If you wish to donate to Ken’s memory, please choose any sports association.

He was a great competitor and an honoured member of the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame. More importantly, he was a pleasure to play against!!! Keep sliding Ken!
