HIPWELL, Mary Elizabeth (nee Lowe), - Passed away peacefully at the age of 95, at St. Viateur Nursing Home in Limoges, Ontario, on Sunday July 27, 2025.

Born in Toronto, she later married the love of her life, Robert W. Hipwell, who predeceased her in 2004 after 52 years of marriage.  She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Charlotte Lowe.

As a couple and later as a family, Mary and Bob would eagerly look forward to their next adventure.  From the Alps in Switzerland, through Europe and the British Isles; to Alaska and coast to coast across North America, no distance or experience was out of reach.   Train, plane, and ocean liner, along with numerous, spontaneous trips in their Winnebago, Mary and Bob were happiest when exploring interesting nooks and crannies.  Her love for her growing family and the joy of camping, hiking and skiing kept her young and full of life.

Mary was an avid collector of family history and shared many stories of the generations with her grandchildren.  She loved her family photo albums and would reminisce about the wonderful life she had. She never missed celebrating a birthday or special occasion.  Mary maintained close connections with the many friends she made over the years.  Her love of her gardens and taking care of the beautiful flowers filled her daily routine.

Mary is survived by her children Anne (Rick) Smith, Rob (Audrey), Dave (Sheri) and Carole (Ron Martin); grandchildren Ryan (Karine), Chris (Michelle), Matt (Lori), Adam (Natalie), Kevin (Kiirsten), Melissa (Brendan) Tate, Laura (Andrew) Fortuna, Kyle (Alba), Michael, and Delainey (Paul) Currie, and her 11 great-grandchildren. She will also be dearly missed by her two sisters Anne and Patricia.

Mary was predeceased by her father, Arthur R.A. Lowe and mother Charlotte (Argles) Lowe, as well as her two brothers Robert A. Lowe, Ted A. Lowe and her granddaughter Rachel Nowosad.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the wonderful staff at St. Viateur Nursing Home for the love and care they showed Mary over the past three and a half years.

A graveside service will be held at the National Military Cemetery, located at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, on Friday, October 3 at 2 p.m.  A celebration of her life will follow at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, at Beechwood Cemetery, until 5:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mary’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or to the Beechwood Cemetery Foundation.

Mary will be dearly missed. She was blessed to have a daughter-in-law (Audrey) to care for her so faithfully and the entire family was blessed to have a Mom, grandmother and great-grandmother in their lives for such a long time. Mary is with Bob now enjoying time without pain or dementia.

Aunt Mary was my only aunt! She was a wonderful person and I was the flower girl at her wedding . I was only 7 or 8 but I still have the picture of me in my beautiful long dress and a flower wreath in my hair. I have many fond memories of our families at Christmas at our Nana Hipwell’s and st the family cottage at Lake Simcoe. She will be missed by all her knew her!
RIP Mary

Hi Margo. I've uploaded a photo of you with the attendants at mom's wedding in 1952.
It was a lovely wedding, I'm sure.

So many wonderful memorial from childhood visiting Aunt Mary and Uncle Bob at their place in Huntsville or at their house in Don Mills. Thinking of all my Hipwell cousins and their families at this time.

I was Elaine Carr & I babysat you three on Three Valleys Drive so many years ago. I was thinking about your Mom & found this notice. I am just reaching out to let you know that I have wonderful memories of both your parents. I remember Mary for her kindness to me as a young teenager & her diligence in maintaining touch with my mom, Lola Carr, in her final years. The last time I spoke with her was when my Mom died and Mary, as always, had lovely things to say. I am sorry that the world has lost such a gentle person. You had wonderful parents.

So many wonderful memories of family get togethers with our Hipwell and Keighley cousins. In more recent years, Aunt Mary shared so much family history with me. I still have all her emails because there was so much information that she sent to me that I didn’t want to forget. I miss our phone calls. Her giggle was so infectious. Sincerely condolences to Rob, Anne, David and Carole, your spouses and kids. ❤️

A special thank you to Audrey for your many years caring for Mary.
