In Loving Memory of Lo Pui Yu (Margaret Lo)
Lo Pui Yu, in her 105th year, passed away peacefully in Montreal on September 26, 2025. Born in Canton, China, she was one of nine children and was primarily raised by a most generous and loving aunt.
Educated at home in China until her aunt’s passing at the age of 14, Lo Pui Yu then moved to Hong Kong to live with her aunt’s sister. At 18, she married a businessman, and together they ran a successful papery. She became known for her kindness toward employees and her generosity, often cooking meals for them.
The papery business did not survive the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II and was eventually dissolved. After WW-II, Lo Pui Yu divorced her husband and opted to raise her four children alone with strength, resolve, and tremendous determination. An accomplished tailor/seamstress, she dedicated over 20 years of her life working in a Jesuit convent, sharing her skills and warmth with those around her. She raised her four children on her own and did everything to ensure that they received the best upbringing possible. Unfortunately, her eldest son, Shun-Wing Wu, passed away at the tender age of 12 following several years of suffering from a playground injury.
At the age of 60, Lo Pui Yu moved to Montreal to live with her daughter Mary and her family. She remained fiercely independent, full of pride, and was deeply interested in integrating into Canadian society. She dedicated many years to learning English and even took one of her English teachers with her on a trip of a lifetime to California, Hawaii and Hong Kong. Lo Pui-Yu had six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and she was always most generous to her community, her friends, and her family.
She maintained her playful spirit and mischievous sense of humour well into her later years, living independently until the age of 98. She spent her final years at the Montréal Chinese Hospital, where her twinkling eyes and joyful presence continued to brighten the days of those around her.
