Mabel Modupe George (née Olokungboye), age 90, passed away peacefully in Edmonton, Alberta on December 22nd, 2025.  Mabel was born on May 24, 1935 in Ibadan, Nigeria to the late Elijah Olokungboye and the late Alice Olokungboye.  She is preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Rebecca Odun Idowu, Angela Bisi Thani, and her brother Titus Olu Olokungboye.

Mabel was a kind, loving, intelligent, hardworking, and stylish lady.  She had many careers including as an Elementary School teacher at Anglican Girls Primary school, and later at Corona School Victoria Island, both in Lagos, Nigeria.

Mabel was best known in her role as the wife of His Excellency Mr. Gbadebo Oladeinde George (retired), who served as the Consul General of Nigeria to New York, Deputy Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations, Nigerian Ambassador to Angola and most recently as the Nigerian High Commissioner to Canada.  Following retirement they made Ottawa their home for more than three decades.

They married in March 1960, and she supported his career in the Nigerian foreign service, accompanying him with their growing family to postings in several countries around the world.  Mabel was greatly admired for the ease with which she navigated diplomatic life and she served as a role model for her children, former pupils, friends, and her large extended family.

In her forties she attended and graduated from the New York school of Interior design and established a successful interior design business in Lagos working with high-end clients.  She was a savvy businesswoman, a gracious hostess, a caring spouse, a loving mother and grandmother; supportive of family near and far, and a dedicated teacher specializing in English language, grammar and mathematics.

Mabel is survived by her loving husband of sixty-five years Gbadebo Oladeinde George. Daughters Yewande George, Titilola Britto (Rotimi), and Mobolanle George. Sons Ekundayo George and Oyebode George (Annette Nyamao). Grandchildren Enitan Abdusshahid, Ayodeji Abdusshahid, Ayodele Britto, and Omotesho George. Great granddaughter Zainah Abdusshahid. Sisters Regina Moni Olaniran (Olaitan) and Clara Kemi Omotola (Alaba). Brother in-law Mobolaji Olawale George (Peju) and a large extended family.

Services will be held at the Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Hainstock’s Funeral Home and Crematorium (Edmonton), and Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (Ottawa).
