Mojtaba Mousavi, a lifelong historian and beloved educator, passed away suddenly on February 5, 2026, at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He was 74 years old.

Born in Esfahan, Iran, in September 1951, Mojtaba upheld the highest ideals of wisdom and truth. A devoted scholar, he believed firmly that understanding the past is the key to building a just future. For decades, he shaped the minds of students, teaching the values of critical thinking and civic responsibility.

To all who knew him, Mojtaba was a figure of enduring vitality. His sudden departure, while in excellent health, comes as a devastating shock to his family and community.

Though he made his home in Ottawa, his heart remained tethered to the culture of his homeland. He was a tireless advocate for Iranian heritage, imparting his scholarship weekly on Ottawa’s Persian radio program, Radio Namaashoum.

Mojtaba embodied the spirit of a true guardian of history—a man of integrity, generosity, and a “people‑first” spirit who believed that knowledge and dignity are the highest human virtues.

A funeral service to honour Mojtaba’s life was held in the Sacred Space at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre on Sunday, February 8, 2026. His enduring legacy was further honoured through memorial gatherings held in several cities across his homeland, Iran.

He rests now at Beechwood, the National Cemetery of Canada; his journey on earth has ended, but his legacy of wisdom remains alive in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many students whose lives he illuminated.
